Happened to my wifes HP Pavilion notebook (Win Xp Home SP1 with windows update patches up to SP2)last week also. I removed the notebook hard drive and installed it as an external USB drive to my PC (EZGIG PC Card from Apricorn) and retreived all data from the drive. Scanned the disk files for various sassar and other virus file signatures, but found none.
I could not replace lsass.exe (uses NTFS and apparently has some form of lock on .exe files, perhaps node reparsing?) so I had to reformat the entire disk and run HP's recover CD set to restore the disk to the original factory image.
The wife thinks she had given windows update permission to install a patch just before the problems started, but isn't 100% sure (she leaves it on most of the time, and the problem didn't surface till she unplugged and put it in standby for a short trip away from AC power).
Good luck.
